Caring for the environment

At the Southville Centre we are committed to working in a sustainable way. As part of being a sustainable organisation we have written our commitment to working in an environmentally friendly way for our staff and customers to refer to. In addition we have a visitor commitment that we ask our customers to acknowledge when using the Centre and hopefully beyond. We are a gold standard member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme and hope that our customers and visitors will appreciate our efforts and do their bit to care for the environment both here and elsewhere.

We are taking action to improve the environment by implementing a range of policies and by complying to environmental laws.  These include:

  • Organising, supporting and publicising environmental and cultural activities and events, highlighted on our Eco Board.
  • Nurturing and monitoring our outdoor space for Centre users, employees, our nursery and afterschool club children. Our garden is planted with low maintenance plants, has a water butt and is insect friendly.
  • Using environmentally friendly paper goods and cleaning products. We buy fair trade tea and coffee.
  • Reducing waste, recycling paper, cardboard, cans, plastic and glass bottles.
  • Encouraging use of our water fountain located near garden door.
  • Monitoring energy and water consumption using efficiently.
  • Encouraging our users to travel to the Centre on foot, bicycle or public transport. We promote use of for up to date travel information.
  • Buying local goods and services, and employing local trades people and local staff wherever possible.
  • Composting food waste via on-site garden compost and food waste collection service.
