Your Views and Ideas Matter

The Southville Community Development Association (SCDA) is planning to open a new nursery to serve the BS3 area. This would be on the site at the corner of Chessel Street and Garnet Street, the former home of the Boys’ Brigade.

On Saturday 21st February we held a drop in day at the Brigade Centre, which was attended by over 80 people. This offered people an opportunity to view, and comment on, some emerging sketch designs and to talk to a variety of people involved in the project.

Unable to Attend the Drop-in Day?

All the information is available via the links below, however the design consultation period has now finished and the final application has been submitted to Bristol City Council.

Who are the SCDA?

The Southville Community Development Association (SCDA) is the charity that runs an 84-place nursery at the Southville Centre on Beauley Road (rated Outstanding by Ofsted). However we have more than 200 families on our waiting list, so the Chessels site could help us meet the growing demand for nursery places in our neighbourhood.

What are the proposals?

The site is formally registered as an 'Asset of Community Value' so we are keen to ensure that what we do retains or adds to that ‘value’. We aim to develop a nursery, a meeting space for use by the community and office space for staff. The meeting room would enable the building to continue to be used by local groups such as Slimming World who meet there now.

Will there be any negative impacts?

We hope that our plans would provide positive benefits to the local community but, like any development, it's important that we consider any potential negative impacts and try to mitigate against these.

Can people have a say?

That’s exactly why held the drop-in. Those who attended were able to tell us about any issues, offer ideas and comment on emerging designs. However, if you missed out then, then you can still comment on the planning application by using the link given  above.

Have we bought the site?

Yes, the SCDA finalised the purchase of the former Boys Brigade site in May 2015.
